Lowe's item 1145470 is a Harbor Breeze ceiling fan that came with a remote and a receiver in its canopy. When the receiver fails, the remote stops running the fan and light even with a fresh battery. Our replacement brings back three fan speeds plus off and full light dimming.

One remote per fan

After pairing, the receiver answers the remote it learned. Keeping a separate remote for each fan avoids surprises, like the bedroom fan changing speed when someone adjusts the living room. If you add another fan later, pair it while the others are powered off.

DIP-switch remotes are a different system

Some older fan remotes have a row of tiny switches inside the battery cover that must match the receiver. This receiver does not use them. It learns a compatible remote instead, so a DIP-switch remote will not pair with it.

Before you order

• Some fans came with a plug-in receiver that has a square plug instead of wire-nut leads. Contact us if yours has a plug.

Setup & Pairing

You need a ladder, a screwdriver and a voltage tester.

1. Cut power at the breaker panel, not just the wall switch.
2. Lower the canopy and disconnect the old receiver, noting which wire went where.
3. Hook up the replacement receiver with wire nuts exactly as the old one was wired, then tuck it into the canopy.
4. Make sure other fans with learning receivers are switched off, so only this one learns the remote.
5. Restore power, then within about 30 seconds hold the 0 (fan off) button on the remote until the light blinks twice.
6. Check every speed, then turn the light on, off and dim it.
