For an Emerson fan, first decide what failed. If the receiver in the canopy still works, buy a handheld that matches your remote's number and check the receiver model it needs. If there is no working receiver, a remote and receiver kit like the SR400 is the usual fix. Failed wall controls are replaced with a matching wall unit.
Which Emerson fan control do you need?
Start with what is in your hand, or what is missing from it:
- Your Emerson handheld is lost or broken, and the fan has a receiver in the canopy. You need a replacement handheld whose listing names your number, such as the SR600 Emerson fan remote, the remote for the CF955L Emerson fan or the UC7212T Emerson remote.
- The fan has never had a remote, or the receiver itself is gone. A kit with both pieces, like the SR400 remote and receiver kit, is the usual route.
- The control on the wall has failed. Look at the fan-only rotary controls such as the UC9021B Emerson wall control and the SW95 Emerson wall control.
Emerson itself was founded in 1890 in St. Louis, Missouri, as a maker of electric motors and fans, and its company history credits it with the first electric fans sold in North America. Some fans you will find in our Emerson listings also carry the Kathy Ireland name.
Six-speed Emerson handhelds: check the receiver first
The SR600 listing is meant for fans with an RC188, RC212 or RCK55 receiver, so read the label on the receiver in the canopy before ordering, and check the notes on whichever listing carries your number. The six-speed Emerson handhelds we list give six speeds with an LED indicator, one-touch reverse, and separate uplight and downlight dimming. The SR600 box includes two AAA batteries and a wall bracket with hardware.
- Confirm the receiver model, with the breaker off if you need to lower the canopy to read it.
- Install the two included AAA batteries.
- Set the remote to your receiver following the instructions packed with it.
- Test every speed, reverse and both lights, then mount the bracket.

Adding a remote with the Emerson SR400 kit
The SR400 kit includes a handheld, a canopy-mount receiver, two AAA batteries, a wall bracket and mounting hardware. It handles four fan speeds plus off and full-range dimming for incandescent bulbs up to 250 watts. Set aside roughly 30 minutes and have a ladder ready.
Set the fan’s pull chain to high and leave it there; otherwise the receiver cannot deliver the top speeds. Note that the SR400 handheld has no reverse button; you change direction with the switch on the fan’s motor housing. Our guide to adding a remote to a ceiling fan covers the bigger picture.
Replacing an Emerson wall speed control
The UC9021B and SW95 are each four-speed controls with no light function. A few details from the UC9021B instructions:
- Hang on to the old control’s pair of 6-32 mounting screws, since they may be needed again.
- Connect the control’s leads to the labeled fan and supply wires exactly as the included instructions show.
- White neutral wires in the box stay joined together.
- The UC9021B comes with white, almond and light almond knobs, so you can match your existing faceplate.
As with any wall box job, switch off the breaker first and check with a voltage tester. Unsure whether a wall control or a handheld suits your room better? Read wall control vs remote.
Emerson troubleshooting
Where is the number on my Emerson remote?
Usually on the back of the handheld or inside the battery compartment. The receiver has its own label in the canopy. An FCC ID may be printed nearby; that is a radio registration, not the number we list by. Our model number guide has more spots to check.
The fan will not reverse from the remote
If you have the SR400 kit, that is by design: use the motor switch. On a six-speed handheld, try fresh batteries and confirm the receiver model.
The downlight works but the uplight does not
Separate uplight and downlight buttons only help if your fan actually has both light circuits wired to the receiver. Check that the uplight bulbs are good and that your fan model has an uplight at all. If only one bulb fixture is out, our ceiling fan light not working guide runs through bulbs, light kits and receiver outputs.
The wall control works, but only on one speed
Look up at the fan. If its pull chain is set to anything other than high, the wall control can only slow the fan from that point. Set the chain to high and try every position again.
The fan is wobbling or the mount seems loose
Turn it off and inspect the hanger. The CPSC announced a 2012 recall of Emerson Corsair ceiling fans over a hanger bracket that could spread apart, so owners of that model should check the notice. More general fixes are in ceiling fan remote not working.
