About the Harbor Breeze 40821 Remote

Harbor Breeze model 40821 is a 52-inch fan in brushed nickel, listed at Lowe's as item 0599849. This replacement remote gives it back three fan speeds, a separate off button and light dimming, on a 315 MHz signal that doesn't need aiming.

This remote is built for the 40821. Nothing gets rewired: it learns the receiver in the canopy when you switch the power off and on and hold Learn. If the fan's sticker reads 40821, you're set.

Dimming LED bulbs without flicker

Flicker or buzzing at low settings usually means the bulbs aren't rated for dimming. Use bulbs labeled dimmable and keep the D/CFL switch on D. If you'd rather keep non-dimmable bulbs, slide it to CFL; the light button then simply turns the light on and off.

No receiver is included. Your fan's original receiver needs to be working.

Setup & Pairing

Start by loading a 12V A23 battery (sold separately) into the 40821 remote, checking the polarity marks.
If nearby fans use the same kind of remote, switch their power off so they don't learn it too.
Flip the fan's circuit off, then on, to open its pairing window.
Before 30 seconds pass, hold down Learn (inside the battery bay) for roughly 5 seconds.
You'll know it worked when the fan comes on low and the light stays off. No response? Power cycle and try again.

Tip: write the pairing steps on a sticky note inside a cabinet door for next time.
