The 51708 is a Zolman Pike 60 in. DC ceiling fan from Home Decorators Collection, and it depends on its handheld remote for almost everything. This replacement handles speed, reverse, the light and dimmer, the timer and breeze modes in one unit.

The 51708 is the Brushed Nickel finish version of this fan. Read the model sticker on the motor housing to be sure it matches. Setup is a power-cycle and one press of the Learn button.

Start with fresh batteries

Weak cells cause most remote complaints. This handset runs on two AAA batteries, which are not in the box, so pick up a fresh pair of name-brand alkalines before you pair it. Old or mixed batteries can let the indicator blink while the signal is too weak to reach the fan.

Why the blades move during pairing

When pairing succeeds, the fan light flashes and the blades start turning. That is the receiver confirming it has stored the new code. Once you see it, test a few buttons such as light, speed and reverse, then snap the battery cover back on.

Before you order

Make sure the old handset for your 51708 had 9 speeds, reverse and a timer.
AC fans and 6-speed DC fans need a different remote.

Setup & Pairing

Put two fresh AAA batteries in the remote and leave the battery door off for now.
Make sure the little slide switch in the battery bay reads 1.
Cut power to the fan with the wall switch or breaker, then restore it.
Quickly, inside the 30-second window, tap the Learn button next to the batteries.
Watch for the light to flash and the blades to start turning. That means it has paired; if not, repeat the steps.

Tip: fresh batteries make the first try far more likely to work.
