About the Hampton Bay / Home Decorators Collection 59248 Remote

Lost the remote for a 59248 ceiling fan? This replacement gives you high, medium and low speeds, a dedicated off button and light on/off with dimming. On color-changing LED lights it also switches the tone.

Please check that your fan came with a remote and a receiver, and that its label reads 59248. A fan sold with pull chains only has nothing for a remote to talk to. Pairing uses four DIP switches.

Battery tips

The remote takes one 12V A23 battery, a small cylinder sold near the watch batteries in most stores. It isn't included, so pick one up before the remote arrives. If range starts to shrink, a fresh battery is the first fix to try.

Reading the code from the receiver

No old remote? The receiver tucked in the fan canopy has the same switch bank. Turn off the breaker, lower the canopy and open the receiver box with a very small screwdriver. Write down which switches are up and which are down, then copy that pattern onto the new remote.

Before you order

A fan sold with pull chains only has no receiver, and this remote can't add one.

Setup & Pairing

Remove the rear cover of the remote and find the row of tiny switches near the battery slot.
Line up switches 1 to 4 with the code from your old remote, flipping each one until the two match exactly.
Set switch 5 to off if your light isn't dimmable, which stops flicker.
Insert one 12V A23 battery (sold separately), close the cover, then try each speed and the light button.
Code unknown? Set one pattern, press a button, and move on to the next until the fan reacts. There are 16 in all.
Running more than one of these fans? Give each fan and its remote a different code.

Where do I find my fan's model number?

Look for a sticker on top of the motor housing, or check the owner's manual or original box.

Is this an original Hampton Bay remote?

What is the fifth switch for?

It turns dimming on or off. Leave it on for a dimmable light, or set it to off for a light that can't dim so it doesn't flicker.
