The 99981 is a Altura 68 in. DC ceiling fan from Home Decorators Collection, and it depends on its handheld remote for almost everything. This replacement handles speed, reverse, the light and dimmer, the timer and breeze modes in one unit.

Check the model sticker on top of the motor housing, or the box and manual, and make sure it reads 99981. Pairing takes about a minute with the Learn button, and there are no DIP switches.

Wobble and hum are not remote issues

If the fan wobbles or hums, the remote is not the cause. Wobble usually comes from loose blade screws or blades out of balance; a balancing kit fixes most cases. A light hum can come from the motor or a loose canopy. The remote only sends commands for speed, direction, light and timer.

Find the number on your old remote

Flip the old handset over and slide off the battery door. The part number is usually printed on a sticker inside the compartment or molded into the plastic on the back. Read it under good light, because worn labels are easy to misread. If the sticker is gone, the fan manual or the original box often lists it.

Setup & Pairing

Setup takes about a minute and needs no tools.

Put two fresh AAA batteries in the remote and leave the battery door off for now.
Check the slide switch next to the batteries and set it to 1.
Power-cycle the fan: off at the wall switch or breaker, then on again.
Right away, while the 30-second window is open, press Learn and let go.
When the light flashes and the blades begin to spin, pairing is complete. No response? Start over from the power-cycle step.

Tip: fresh batteries make the first try far more likely to work.
