About the Hunter 27181 Wall Control

Our 27181 replacement wall control puts four fan speeds back on your wall. If your Hunter four-speed slide control has worn out, gone noisy or stopped changing speeds, this hard-wired slide control takes its place in the same switch box.

It is made for Hunter and Casablanca reversible paddle-blade fans that came with the 27181 control and draw 1.6 A or less. Check the label on your old control: if it reads 27181, this is the one you need. Install is a 2-wire swap: hot in, fan out.

Before you order

Fan only: it does not control or dim the light. If your light shares the fan's wire, the light only works with the slider on High.
Need fan and light on one wall control? You want a dual-slide control like the 27182.
Not for DC-motor fans or Hunter Original series fans.

Setup & Pairing

Safety first: turn off power to the fan at the breaker panel, not just the wall switch.
Pull the fan's speed chain to High and leave it there.
Remove the old wall switch. Connect one lead of the 27181 control to the incoming hot (line) wire and the other to the wire going up to the fan.
Connect the box ground wire, if you have one, to the ground screw on the control's mounting plate.
Screw the control into the wall box, attach the wall plate, and turn the breaker back on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the 27181 work with my Hunter fan?

It works with reversible AC paddle-blade fans rated 1.6 A or less. It is not for Hunter Original series fans or DC-motor fans.

Does it control my fan's light?

No. It only changes fan speed. If the light is on the same wire as the fan, the light will only work with the slider on High.

Do I need a neutral wire?

No. It is a 2-wire control that connects between the hot wire and the wire to the fan. A ground is optional.

What should the fan's pull chain be set to?

Set it to High and leave it there. Changing the pull chain after installing can damage the fan or the control.

What if my old control has a different number?
