About the Harbor Breeze 40091 Remote

The 40091 is one of the 52-inch Harbor Breeze fans whose manual calls for a 12-volt remote with a D/CFL switch. This replacement keeps that setup: three speeds, an off button of its own, and a light you can dim or set to on/off only.

We made this remote for the 40091, and it pairs with the receiver without tools. The whole job is a trip to the wall switch, a 5-second hold of Learn, and a quick test of each button.

After a power outage

Outages and surges can make a fan forget its remote. If the buttons stop working after the lights flicker, pair again: cycle the fan's power, then hold the Learn button for about 5 seconds within 30 seconds. It takes about a minute and needs no tools.

Choosing dimmable bulbs

Look for the word dimmable on the bulb box. LED bulbs that aren't rated for dimming may flicker, hum or cut out at low levels. Warm white bulbs around 2700K give a soft, even glow when you turn the light down for movies or bedtime.

Before you order

Check that your old remote had three speed buttons and an off button before you order.
There is no reverse (fan direction) button on this remote.

Setup & Pairing

If nearby fans use the same kind of remote, switch their power off so they don't learn it too.
Open the battery door of the 40091 remote and insert one A23 12-volt battery the right way round.
Cycle the power: off at the switch or breaker, then on again.
Quickly, within the 30-second window, hold Learn in the battery compartment for around 5 seconds.
The fan starts on low with the light off once it has learned the remote. If not, cycle the power and repeat.

Tip: pair with the remote in the same room as the fan, and keep the battery door open until you've pressed Learn.
