About the TCL Air Conditioner Remote

In the US, TCL is best known for window and portable air conditioners, and their remotes have a habit of slipping behind the couch or quitting after a few seasons. This replacement is set up for TCL: you key in one of the TCL codes printed in the instructions, and from then on it runs power, mode, temperature, fan speed and swing on your unit.

There are fourteen TCL codes to work through, which gives you plenty of chances to land on the one that matches your model. If you own one of TCL's newer wall-mounted or heat pump units, the same codes are the place to start, and the remote can also search for a working code by itself.

Setup & Pairing

You only do this once. Keep the TCL codes from the instructions handy.

Slide off the back cover and put in two AAA batteries, matching the + and - marks.
Pull down the small panel on the lower front of the remote. SELECT sits behind it, and every key has a tiny number in its bottom-left corner: that's the digit it enters.
Press SELECT so the code area on the screen flashes, then key in 0273, the first TCL code.
Aim at the air conditioner and press a button. No reaction? Press SELECT again and move through the TCL codes in this order: 0273, 0274, 0275, 0276, 0277, 0278, 0279, 0280, 0281, 0476, 0493, 0570, 0786, 1305.
Once the unit reacts, try mode, fan and temperature. If the AC responds but one button does nothing, enter the next TCL code and test again.

None of the TCL codes worked? Point the remote at the unit and hold SELECT for 5 seconds. It begins sending codes one after another; press any key the moment the AC beeps or switches, and that code is kept. A full search can take a while, so keep it aimed.

Finally, set the clock (CLOCK, then TIME +/-, then CLOCK again) and tap C/F if you'd rather read Fahrenheit.

Will this run my TCL window or portable AC?

It's set up for TCL with the TCL codes, and most TCL units that take an infrared remote get full control. We can't promise every model, so if a key doesn't respond, move to the next TCL code.

Which TCL code do I try first?

Start with 0273 and go down the list in the order printed. Write down the code that works in case you change batteries later.

Does it need to point at the unit?

Yes. It's infrared, so it needs a clear line of sight to the AC's front panel, from up to about 25 feet.

Are batteries included?

No. It takes two AAA batteries, which you'll need to supply.
