Will this work on an 18,000 or 24,000 BTU unit?

No. Larger 18,000 and 24,000 BTU units use a different remote, our E22P88426.

Does it work through walls?

No. It's infrared, so it needs a clear line of sight to the front of the indoor unit, just like a TV remote.

Is it a universal remote?

No. It's model-specific, so there are no codes to look up, and it won't run other brands of air conditioner.

My old remote says U01A05426. Is this the right one?
